How about considering an overlooked cat?

So, you are thinking of welcoming a new cat or kitten into your family. All cats are special, but have you considered adopting a cat or kitten who may have been overlooked? Everyone loves a fluffy kitten, but there are cats who are less obvious choices but who equally deserve a safe and loving home and are waiting for a new start to their lives.

Black/ black and white cats often spend a longer time in rescue. This is a surprising but sad fact. Black cats in particular are often overlooked in favour of say, ginger or tabby cats. Yet they have a subtle beauty and often their eyes look striking against their ebony fur. Always remember that personality is more important than coat colour!

Shy and nervous cats. If you can offer a calm environment and have a patient, understanding approach you could transform the life of a shy /nervous cat who might otherwise get overlooked in favour of more confident individuals. With gentle encouragement their own confidence will  grow and seeing your cat’s personality slowly emerge as you gradually earn their trust is enormously rewarding. Over time, this can lead to the development of a unique and very special bond.

Elderly cats often make the most wonderful companions yet can sadly get left behind so it is extra special to offer them a  home at this stage of their life. They have established personalities, are calmer and often have so much love to give. Although they will still appreciate some playtime, they will be equally happy having a snooze or a cuddle. They are generally more self-sufficient too. Even a 7-10-year old cat is only equivalent to a person in their mid-40s-50s and is only classified as ‘mature’ and may have many years ahead.

Cats with health issues, however minor, are often overlooked. Yet these cats have just as much love to give and simply need an owner willing to make that extra effort and give them a chance. Many health conditions can be easily managed with appropriate changes to diet and prescribed medication if needed. These cats can potentially go on to live a relatively normal life for years. Equally, blind or deaf cats can thrive given patience  and understanding and a safe, stable home environment.

FIV  Unfortunately there are a lot of misconceptions about FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) in cats. This is a species-specific virus that cannot be spread to humans or other animals. Please speak to us for more information and advice. With care and love FIV cats can live happily for many years.

semi-feral cat2

Semi-ferals When kittens or cats have not been handled at a young age and not had a stable and loving environment then they can find it challenging to trust you and can be skittish. Yet given a calm, patient and loving approach, they can over time learn to trust you and it is wonderful when a breakthrough comes. We would add that some experience of cat behaviour would be invaluable in bringing round a semi-feral cat.
