Would you like to foster for us?
During 2025 The Cats Whiskers Rescue (East Herts) successfully rehomed 103 cats and kittens. We were only able to do this with the help of our network of fosterers who are all volunteers and open up a space in their home to care for cats or kittens in need. We are in URGENT need of more fosterers to help us cope with the current high demand for foster spaces.
Sadly, cats of all ages may be given up or abandoned due to any number of reasons. Some of the many challenges we face include cats left behind when people move away, those bought on impulse on the internet, unneutered cats producing unwanted litters of kittens. Others may have been surrended due to unexpected changes in personal circumstances including financial problems. Every case is different; every cat is unique.
What do you need to become a fosterer?
A love of cats, a desire to help, a suitable space in your home and some dedicated time to give to your foster cat’s care. Offering a foster place allows a rescue cat to relax and be cared for in a home environment and this can greatly help to prepare them to be adopted. Seeing their true personality greatly increases the chances of a successful homing. You do not need to have previous experience as a fosterer as our team is here to help. We do ask that you live within reach of the Hertford area. By volunteering to become a fosterer, you can literally help to transform and, in some cases, save a life.
What does our charity offer a fosterer?
We will cover all costs relating to food, equipment (cat beds, litter trays, scratching posts, etc) and veterinary treatment. We will also liaise with you regarding neutering, vaccinations and microchipping at the appropriate time and offer you help and advice whenever you need it either directly or through our fosterers’ WhatsApp group. We can offer local transport to vets if required.
Some of our fosterers opt to provide long-term care for cats who have very slim chances of being adopted, often elderly with existing health conditions. In this case, we do ask that you live within reach of one of our approved veterinary practices; all veterinary expenses are paid for. Please note that under a long-term foster agreement, fosterers do pay for food and litter as they practically become members of their family.
If you are interested in fostering, simply fill in a volunteering form and have a chat with us to find out more. We will be delighted to hear from you. Remember that if at any stage you need advice, then our friendly team will be more than willing to help.
